Located in the heart of Palm Beach County, Florida, on the Intracoastal Waterway, Hypoluxo is an altogether charming town that boasts easy access to the stunning nearby beaches.
The name "Hypoluxo" appears on an 1841 War Department map, but it has a disputed origin. According to one theory, it is basically a composite of the Greek root "hypo-" (meaning "under" or "below average") and the Latin word "lux" (meaning "light"). In 1873, Hannibal Pierce, as well as his family, settled here. Charlie W. Pierce, Hannibal's son, claimed that a Seminole woman had indeed told his mother that the Seminole name for Lake Worth was Hypoluxo. He evidently interpreted this to mean "island" or "water all around, no get out". However, the name that the Pierces wrote as "Hypoluxo" was interpreted as "Opoloccha" in a history posted by the Town of Hypluxo. According to J. Clarence Simpson, citing William A. Read, the name comes from the Creek-Seminole words "Hapo" (meaning "mound") and "Plotski" (meaning "round"), thus meaning "round mound".
